Japan, späte Edo-Zeit. Die Erde wurde von einer außerirdischen Rasse namens Amanto annektiert, die technisch der Menschheit des 21. Jhds. weit voraus ist. Als Maßnahme zur Friedenssicherung wurden Japans Samurai entwaffnet. Einer von ihnen, Sakata Gintoki, schlägt sich nun als Gelegenheitsarbeiter durch und trifft dabei auf allerlei buntes Volk.
